If you look at most references and the prominent thoughts is that there’s no cure yet for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).

This is simply due to the problem with the diagnosis of CFS. There is no real causes for this illness has been found as yet.

If you trawl the subject wide enough, you’ll see many experts were pointing to many different causes to it. Some believe it was brought about by virus, while another blame the oxidative stress. Some other theorize it was something to do with how you react to the illness.

Whatever that was, I personally believe there’s always hope on the horizon. All we need to do is to look hard enough for possible solutions and have faith in it.

So in this blog I love to share my own adventure in finding good treatments for CFS. I have my own good and bad times as everyone else but I always try to stand up and keep going.

‘Fighting your illness’ might not be a good word for this but I think ‘taming our health problem’ could be the one.

This is a lot easier said than done but if you’re determined and having good support you’ll make it.

Finally, never ever give up and you already have won half the battle.

Ok, keep searching and I wish you all the best. Good luck.

Yesterday, I felt terribly weak compared to the past two weeks which went relatively well. The condition changed my mood downwards and I didn’t feel like talking to anyone. It’s all about this illness at the moment spinning in my head. So I went to a late morning bed hoping to recover.

After the nap I woke up with a slight better feeling yet not fully stable. I continued my normal chores anyway and that included surfing the net. I decided to continue my search for help with CFS as in the past I’ve found three significant sources that contribute to my recovery however slowly or quickly.

This time I checked out a therapy offered by Dr David Mickel and this is my fourth significant discovery on the subject.

As for now, I’ve not taken the one-on-one treatment offer. From what I understand, Dr Mickel does not use medicines on his patients but I believe it’s more of some special form of consultation that he employs.

After watching the video, reading newspaper article about a patient’s testimonial and some info on the website I decided to take an action. This was – not to entertain too much all my body senses about pain, weaknesses, fatigue, anxiety.

Almost immediately I can feel better and having more willpower to continue the day and doing what I wanted to do. So I picked up my gear, setup the treadmill and did a light 5 minutes walk. That evening and night were much better than most of other days (or nights). My sleep was relatively smooth too with lesser interruptions.

Today I woke up making a will not to surrender to all those ‘negative reactions’ I always had when fatigue set in. And you know what? Today I drove my car for quite a distance with a lot more confidence since I’ve not been driving much since many months ago.

Up until now, my physical and thoughts also felt a lot lighter than usual. Let’s see how long this will last for me.

I have very little idea about Dr Mickel’s approach in treating CFS patients as I did not enrol into his treatment. I also understand his method can be quite controversial to some people.

Anyway, if you’re interested to know more about Dr Mickel’s approach, please visit his website at:

www.mickeltherapy.com

I particularly like the Back Issues Newsletter best.

When you did take a look, I hope you can share your finding with a comment or two here as well.

By Simona Rusnakova

In modern society the quality of our lives is supposed to be getting better as society in general improves. I suppose if we look back 30 or 40 years ago we would not like to go back to how they lived, without all the modern conveniences like cars, washing machines, travel, holidays etc. however one of the drawbacks of modern life seems to be that we have less time for ourselves and others. For example if you’re part of an international sales team very often you will spend a lot of time travelling from country to country, this sounds great but this type of lifestyle doesn’t have the time for family life or taking care of elderly parents. You don’t have to be part of an international sales team to be under this type of pressure to take care of your family needs, as a lot of modern jobs especially in high level management often takes too much of your personal time.

We have to stop and think about how we are going to take care of the elderly population? In each of our family structure we all have to provide some resources to take care of our parents or relatives in their time of need. Even though it’s obvious to say but who is going to take care of us when we grow old? The answer to this question can be complicated and often will take a whole family working together to resolve it, if it can be resolved. As taking care of your elderly parents, relatives or friends can pose difficult issues to be resolved but it is something we have to take the time to consider and not dig our heads in the sand and hope the problem will go away. Even if the only thing you can do is pay for a nursing home type of environment, you have to think of where the money is going to come from in later years. As you need to plan not only for your parents but also yourself and your kids sometimes this can be overbearing.

There is no doubt about it that caring for the elderly and sick cannot be done without doctors nurses, hospitals, nursing homes etc. However when patients are able to leave the health environment and go to their home very often they will need extra care sometimes extra equipment. Health services are now very good as giving some services to friends and relatives that are willing to take care of people in the home situation. Like everything in recession early times one has to fight harder for any help that they require. As budgets are getting smaller and resources are drying up there isn’t the same amount of help now than there was a year ago. This does not mean that we just accept it but it can mean that we lobby and fight for what we think is necessary under the circumstances.

In a lot of cases there are real needs to be taken care of, patients may need wheelchairs, walking aids, lifting aids, physiotherapy and much more. If you believe like I do a friend or relative will recover much quicker in the home environment then you will do your best to make that happen. Even though the quality of care is getting much better in nursing homes and hospitals there is nothing better than a patient being at home in a familiar environment. How often have you said yourself even after being away on holidays that there is nothing like home, imagine what this is like if you’re not in the full of your health?

By April Lentini

It happens to everyone with parents. One day, it will be time to take care of those who raised you. Retirement homes have long been the choice for busy families that don’t have the time or the room to care for their folks. But there are other options. If you plan ahead, you hook your mom and dad up with an agreeable living situation that will make you happy, them happy, and will not break your budget.

I recently quit my job at a retirement home. By all appearances, it was a very nice retirement home. The first thing you saw when you walked in was a large elegant dining room, a winding staircase, and a grand piano in the middle of a sky-lit atrium. The average age of residents was eighty five years old, and while it was considered “independent living” most of the residents were dependent. They depended on staff to prepare them three meals a day, they depended on the bus driver for transportation (since many had given up driving) and they even depended on an activity director to schedule ways for them to pass their time (that was my job). These services were selling points for the facility, and families were willing to pay an average of four thousand ($4,000) dollars a month so mom and dad could play bingo and bridge in a nicely furnished community. Because this facility was considered independent living, the rent did not cover health services.

In the year that I worked there, I got to know many of the residents. They confided in me. I learned that many of the seniors never really felt like it was their home or even a suitable replacement. Despite the extravagant landscaping, it was still institutionalized living. A lot of them hated the food. Some were even pretending to be happy just for their children. OK, some old folks are just cranky, and you can’t please them no matter what. But regardless, I couldn’t help the feeling that in many ways, retirement homes are completely unnecessary and even a waste of money.

In today’s tight economy, it’s time to be creative and resourceful when it comes to finding a home for Mom and Dad. Rather than committing your parents (or grandparents) to expensive retirement institutions, consider these housing alternatives.

Make room at home

(Seriously.)

Up until the second half of the 20th century, this is how people lived! Multiple generations lived under one roof. Make room in the basement. Convert the garage into another bedroom. Or simply plan ahead now and buy a bigger house than you need. Ever notice how big houses were in the 19th century? That’s because families actually lived together. They were much more unified than they are today. In the old days, it was not unusual to have granny answer the door in her curlers. In fact, in many households, grandparents had an important and useful role in the family. I’m not sure what changed, but somehow Americans became embarrassed by their elderly relatives. It’s time be proud of our families again –no matter how senile they may be!

Of course having your parents live with you works extremely well if you actually get along with them. I lucked out having really cool folks. But it can be done even if you have differences. Just make sure you have enough space for privacy. My parents are not even retired yet, but my husband and I have decided that our next house will be designed to accommodate them when the time comes. We will have an in-law suite (on the first floor of course) or a separate cottage on our property. It’s important to make sure the space is accessible with walkers and wheelchairs. In my opinion, it’s never too early to consider a house with extra space for aging relatives. You can always make use of the space in the meantime by renting it out, hosting an exchange student, or housing your teenage kids.

Buy the house next door

(Hire home health care services as needed.)

Keep property in the family. On a business trip in Greece, I made friends with a local colleague. Before going out to dinner, she invited me to her brand new condo to meet her family. Her family lived in separate condos, but literally owned the whole building. Her great grand parents lived in the condo on the first floor, her grand parents lived on the second floor, her parents lived on the third floor and she had just gotten the deed to the fourth floor where her and her new husband lived. Why pay over four thousand ($4,000) dollars a month on a small apartment in a retirement home, when you can purchase the house next door (or the apartment below you?) Most mortgage payments are considerably cheaper than rent at a retirement community and plus your money goes toward an investment. Not to mention the sense of true independence this will provide your parents. Old people like to have their own things too.

Understandably, some seniors need special care. In this case you can hire a home health service! There are enough services out there for you to choose from a la carte. Many private health services provide drivers, nurses, and housekeepers as needed. Decide what services you and your parents really need to spend money on and employ a private company. There are many such services. You can find them online or just go to your nearest “independent living” retirement home and look through the multitude of home health care brochures. Otherwise, if your parents are close enough, you can provide meals for them and take them shopping. Of course there may be a time when seniors require full-time nursing care for serious illnesses, but in the meantime, why pay for three meals a day at Sleepy Hollow Retirement when you can keep real estate in the family?

Encourage your parents to move to a big city.

(Especially a city you would want to visit!)

For the more active retirees, there are options for adventure. If you have the kind of parents that can’t stand to be still, you may consider packing them up and sending them off. The complaint I heard to most when working in a retirement home was how much the residents missed their cars. They hated giving up their wheels and missed being able to go wherever they want when they want. Subsequently, there is an increasing trend of seniors moving to large cities so they can take advantage of public transportation. While many people have sprawled out to the suburbs, it makes sense for driving impaired seniors to choose an urban setting. living in the heart of a metropolitan area means you don’t need a car, plus there are many things to do and see.

Send your parents to college.

If your parents have an active mind, think about getting them a dorm on a college campus. That’s right, some colleges are now catering to seniors and even offering free classes and discounts on amenities such as golf and tennis. Who needs bingo night when you can take a French class, go to a football game, or see a theatre performance? Research has shown that mental activity may prevent dementia. So, for those seniors considering an "institutional lifestyle," they may as well choose a college campus over a retirement home. The cost of senior dorms vary. Depending on the housing package, some dorms may be just as expensive as retirement homes. But hey, if you plan on forking out rent for a home, renting a room on a lively college campus sure beats the activity department of any retirement home.

Help your parents escape the country.

Retiring abroad may be an appealing choice for seniors who are looking to stretch their dollars. If they insist on enlisting in a retirement community, look at places like Mexico. In fact, many retirement homes in Mexico cater to the American market. One major pitfall of course, is that you won’t get to see them as often. But look at it this way, you’d have a cool place to visit. A few years ago, a lady from England made news for choosing to live out her golden years on a cruise ship. 86-year-old Bea Muller of Florida was aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2000 when her husband died. She didn’t want to move back home to live alone and she didn’t want to live in a retirement home. So, she decided to sell everything and book herself for a world cruise one year at a time. In her case, with all the amenities, it actually worked out cheaper than assisted living.

Of course there may be that rare instance where your parents insist on living in a retirement home. They may actually want to have a 400 square foot apartment, collect "funny money," endure Elvis impersonators, and rely on a one-size-fits all activity calendar for fun. But this is doubtful. Most people want to remain as independent as possible for as long as they can. Most people want to be an active member of a family or community. No matter how old and senile, there are certainly plenty of options for giving them that opportunity outside a cookie-cutter retirement home.

Back in the nineties, when dating websites were in their infancy, internet relationships were generally frowned upon. The stigma it carried seemed to label people who dated over the internet as incapable of getting a date, relying on the internet to do it for them. It was greatly associated with weirdoes and potential stalkers or perverts roaming the web to prey on unsuspecting internet users.

If a woman was asked how she met her new man, she might hear a sigh, or a gasp, followed by a disapproving look when she replied “On the internet.” Has that changed at all today? While people may have become more comfortable with internet dating using popular sites such as Eharmony.com and Match.com, there’s still skepticism about its efficacy. Do internet relationships last, and who’s really benefiting from internet dating?

“People who’re not serious, playing games” said Tonya, an attorney and writer. “In my experience, they’re the ones who are taking over internet dating.” After trying it out for the first time in the late nineties, she found an internet relationship difficult to come by. She ended up with two undesirable experiences.

Her first internet relationship involved a man who, after months of dating her, was involved with other women who were calling her at work. Although reluctant, she agreed to meet another guy who said he didn’t have a recent photo to send her. “When I met him, the only part of his description of himself that was accurate was that he was tall. He left out his sloppy looking rolls of fat, his wrinkled up, slouchy clothes, and his man breasts. After that, I gave up internet relationships.”

The typical complaints most people have in common about developing internet relationships are: profiles are totally fabricated; people inaccurately characterize themselves; and some users lie about being married or in a relationship. These experiences are never advertised and can cause people to lose faith when all they see are “success stories” on television. There are people who have been dating for years via the internet wondering when they’re going to have a success story of their own.

Tara, an academic advisor, and her husband, Robert, an assistant professor, have a story that can definitely be called a “success.” They met in 1998 and were married a year later. Although they actually met through voicemail, they have insightful viewpoints about the process of electronic dating—whether it’s through voicemail or internet relationships.

Tara had her own rules for meeting someone for the first time. “Keep it casual, meet in a public place during daylight hours, and give a couple of friends detailed information about your date and where you plan to meet,” she explained. Tara and Robert’s first date started off casual when they met at the pier in Santa Monica, Calif. The date was extended to dinner, a movie, a stroll along the boardwalk, lots of conversation, and several kisses at the end of the night. A total of thirteen hours spent together. Now husband and wife, they have a child, Michael, who is four-years-old.

Robert pointed out that internet relationships have changed a great deal since he and Tara met. “When anything is mass produced it changes the way people communicate. A homeless person can create a profile on a dating site because it’s more accessible now. If I were someone in the dating market right now, I wouldn’t want to date online. I’d much rather see a woman’s face and her smile for the first time, in person.”

Lee Greene, a transportation manager, has had some fleeting and strange encounters in his internet dating experience, such as a woman who wanted to pay for him to visit her in another state because he looked like her ex-husband. But he managed to have an eight-month courtship with a woman he met through the internet. “We were developing a meaningful relationship, but we were in two different places. She was more established and I still needed to get myself together. But it was an ego booster to have an attractive woman help me realize the areas of my life that I needed to work on—a woman who was genuinely interested in me." The positivity alone made the experience a “success story” for him.

So does the method in which we date have a bearing on the quality of our relationships? Aren’t we the ones who determine whether relationships last, on or off the internet? The internet is just a microcosm of society as a whole. Internet relationships are only as good as who we are outside of the internet. The desire to have a positive dating experience should be the motivating force.

Expecting specific outcomes seem to increase one’s chances of becoming highly disappointed and frustrated. The internet is simply a tool which makes dating more convenient. Unfortunately, some people use it to deceive other people. Anyone looking for true love through internet relationships should focus on being what they are looking for while proceeding with caution and keen observation.
